有人错误地认为日常的雷击电压不会击坏设备，但是我们需要知道的是即使雷击所造成的感应电压不足于一次击坏设备，但经过长年累月的过压冲击，也会引起设备零件的老化，让设备使用寿命急剧下降，而旧设备就更加容易遭受破坏，严重地影响网络的性能稳定。由于雷电会给通信业带来灾难性的结果，所以防雷技术应是通信业必须关注的话题。
突破电气产品研发经理、工程师丁瑞军表示，电涌是电路中随时存在的瞬间过电压或过电流现象，通常只发生在瞬间几微秒内，但由于能量大，往往会给精密电路造成硬伤。在建筑上配备的避雷器无法解决内部电涌干扰，只有在每个设备的取电终端进行防护才可真正杜绝电涌侵袭。
雷电入侵通信设备途径
雷电频发地区有以下特征。一是地形复杂，丘陵地带容易形成对流性天气抬升;二是气候特点属于潮湿，导致雷雨容易吸收空气，直接对流放电;三是高层建筑多。
电源系统是雷电侵入的重要渠道。
据了解，雷电袭击基站、机房供电电源主要有三种方式，即：远点雷击、近点雷击和错相位雷击。 远点雷击是根据磁电转换原理电力供应线路上输送50赫兹的交变电流，线路随之产生交变的磁场，雷击击穿大气时产生高压电场，雷击高压电场通过静电吸收原理，向大地方向运动。在下雨天气，空气湿度增大，此时雷电较易击穿空气通过电线的保护地入地，从而因较高的电压损毁用电设备。为此，防雷必须首先考虑远点雷击。
近点雷击是雷电近点袭击电源，实际上是雷电袭击用电设备所在的建筑物的避雷针，从而引起雷电电磁脉冲的保护问题。避雷针引下线由于电感作用，大只能将50%的电流引入大地。30米以上的楼体引下线只能引下较少电流，其余则通过地面有连接的水管，电力屏蔽槽等联合引雷，其中有25%击穿UPS输出负载的电源线等设备后，通过逻辑地线入地。其中包括UPS的输入、输出的火线对地线端。为此，必须对UPS及重要用电设备如小型机、服务器等设备进行等电位保护。“网线也能成为雷电入侵的路径，对网络端口进行保护，堵死一切雷电导入的端口，才能有效的保护设备免受雷电袭击。”丁瑞军说。
